Some History of The Pincushion

The Pincushion opened in July 1971. A friend and I decided we needed a fabric store in Imlay City.
The first location was very small maybe 800 square feet and 2 blocks from the downtown.

When the shop opened we had Simplicity patterns, fabric, zippers, trims, interfacings, etc. and the
notions needed to sew clothing and home decor,

Within two years we had out grown the space and were ready for a move. We found a vacant store
available in the downtown business area which is also our current location at 113 E. Third St.
Shortly thereafter my partner moved and I was sole proprietor of The Pincushion.

When quilting was rediscovered, I made the transition to a quilt shop. We have about 2,000
square feet of building space and probably the same amount of fabric. We carry a diversified
assortment including beautiful Oriental fabrics. Our walls are covered with samples of
quilts, purses, wall hangings and other projects including examples from the classes we offer.
We maintain our fabric store notions but have added an extensive quilting book, pattern
and quilt supplies selection. Special orders are offered for our valued
customers for items we don’t have in-stock.

Our current and exceptional staff consists of myself, Sally Mainville, Barbara Burak, Pat Bildzok,
Mary Jane Holcomb and Diane Thomas. These ladies are quilters who love fabric and helping our customers.

We have a Saturday Sampler that meets the 3rd Saturday of each month. Every January starts our
Buck-a-Block program and October marks our Annual Thumb Shop Hop.
Classes are offered throughout the year with the majority scheduled in the fall, winter and spring
because the class registration slows during the summer.

Please stop by and visit. We have much to see and admire.

Respectfully,

Joyce Schihl
